So I'm starting to want a new game to play. I went to Gamespot and looked up the review of Generals: Zero Hour, and clicked on "Similar Games". You want to know what it told me? First, it suggested Generals and the Generals + Zero Hour Deluxe Edition. You know, Generals + Zero Hour is pretty similar to Generals and Zero Hour. Idiots. Gamespot also suggested SimGolf - because building a golf course is so much like fighting international terrorism - and an obscure imported 2002 RTS called Hooligans, which is all about being soccer hooligans. The tagline of that game is apparently "The only thing to fear, is running out of beer." And if you think the box speaks for itself, try the scoreboard. Wow. I feel dumber just for knowing about this game.

Anyway, on to games I might actually play. I read Gamespot's 2005 awards and Psychonauts won like half of them. Then again, Gamespot tried to make me play Hooligans. I do remember Gobeski going on about Psychonauts though, so I might check it out. Empire Earth II might be interesting, but there is apparently an expansion pack coming out in about a month and damned if I'm going to buy that game now. There's also Civilization IV, but I'm not really into turn-based games.
I'll probably end up playing a game I brought back from home though - Sub Command. I never really got a chance to play it when we got it, but I did get a fair way through its predecessor 688(I) and I liked that, I even did some of my own TMA.
Of course, this is all assuming I'll have time to play games, which I don't. I manage to squeak in a round of video games here and there though just to stay sane.

no war no wrapped in plastic
I stopped trying to make up titles to posts that actually make sense. Now I'm just pulling random lines from songs I'm listening to. It seemed like the hip thing to do. Or maybe I'm just lazy and like confusing people.
Idiot Neighbor Boy was at it earlier today with his incessant pounding bass, so I went over and yelled at him. This time I didn't ask him to turn it down, I ordered him. It's much quieter now. Hopefully it sticks in his damned head this time.
So far my schedule is not too hectic, but the labs I TA haven't started up yet. I was assigned to a section that conflicted with my schedule and it took me two days to get it sorted out. I have to move my office hours though, which means I'll probably get stuck with some awful time slot. I wish this crap had been taken care of ahead of time instead of waiting until classes have started.
My classes. Quantum and E&M are off and running again like we didn't have a break. They're both pounding away at Lagrangian stuff I should have learned somewhere but didn't. It doesn't seem too bad to pick up though. It always amazes me when several independent classes get hooked on the same topic at the same time. At least I only have to learn one thing instead of two.
My philosophy class looks kind of interesting, although I want to go back and read up on Objectivist moral theory. I believe most of it, but I can't debate because I never remember the specifics. Also, I don't really care what other people believe anyway so there's no point in debate. I also do that Roark thing where I don't pay attention to people in the street. I'm always worried philosophy classes will turn all socialist. They were already throwing the word 'selfish' around in the first class today. I'm not looking for trouble, but I won't go quietly.
PSM seminar is going to make a pain of itself to start with, but then the whole second half of the term is making web pages. Hell, I could sleep through that. Just knowing how to get into my OSU FTP is like a million bonus points.
Speaking of websites, I added a couple game reviews to my much neglected MSU site.
The Nice Device released a song that's going to be on their new album. I can't wait until I can get my hands on that. They apparently have the final mixes in hand. I'll probably have to go to a show to buy it though. I really liked them the first time I saw them, but the second show wasn't quite as good. Part of it was just the sound. "Girls and tuning don't mix." -- Alicia Gbur, retuning after a couple songs.
I saw the Miami Vice trailer online. I thought it looked pretty good, until I stripped out the Linkin Park song they used, the fact that I played Vice City and the Ferrari 360. Then it looked awful. I have never actually seen Miami Vice, so I have no idea what the show was supposed to be like. Remember, 'Miami' spelled backwards is ' I Maim'.
My wireless keyboard shipped and should be here Thursday. Should be cool.
I'm a good chunk of the way into my latest book, Germany's Last Mission To Japan: The Failed Voyage of U-234. It's an interesting piece of history, but sadly you might not realize that from the book. It is kind of tepid when talking directly about U-234, and it also has a tendency to go off and talk about the war as a whole and make some sweeping claims in passing when it should be talking about rogue Nazi submarines. The book's organization is a little odd too. My tome on cryptology that I am excited to read arrived yesterday from UPS with the rest of my stuff from home, so I might start chipping away at that after I finish the U-234 book.

a hybrid of hundreds of troubles
Here we go again. Tomorrow I start my second term at Oregon State. I've been getting stuff organized - as you can see below, I got a new desk (or rather, an actual desk). I'm still getting used to the new setup. I ordered a wireless keyboard, which should be nice. I also like the monitor riser I put Freeman on, it gives me a little extra space and I think it helps with cooling too. My class load should be lighter this term, and I don't have my stupid comm class anymore, but I do have to figure out what's going on with the biodiesel stuff.
I've also been playing some games since I got back. I did my first run through Ace Combat 5, and I've been progressing in Need For Speed: Most Wanted as well. I am very good at getting pink slips in that game, I won both my Lamborghini Gallardo and C6 Corvette instead of having to buy them. I also unlocked one of the ultimate planes in AC5 - it even has a laser - but I have nowhere enough money to buy it.
There was an article in the latest Car and Driver about hybrids vs. regular cars. I was thinking about getting a Prius when I finally get a real job, but then the new Civic hybrid caught my eye. But apparently the regular Civic is almost as good, so now I'm just looking at that kind of car, but I don't really want to get rid of the Malibu to get the same kind of car so I'll probably just wait until the Malibu is about to die. I did see that Chevrolet is finally doing a Malibu SS for 2006, it's about time.

it's the last major festival dance-wise of 1999
Spaghettios have never tasted as good to me as they do now. I have been subsisting on token airplane foods all day. I think my proper lunchtime occured when I was in the air. I fully intended to get a good meal for lunch/dinner in Las Vegas, but their food court was closed! Then I was going to get a good meal in Portland waiting for the shuttle bus, but the plane out of Vegas was over an hour late, so I barely caught the shuttle. Which takes another two hours to get to Corvallis. So now I am eating whatever is left in my cupboards, which is all my canned foods.
I killed time on the planes today by rereading The Cardinal of the Kremlin. It's not Tom Clancy's finest, but it passed the time. Several parts of the book just seem like The Hunt for Red October Part II instead of a new book. I finished the book just as I got on the shuttle, but I had a loaded iPod in reserve.
I went to Fischer's New Year LAN earlier this week. It's been a while since I've been to one of those. I did good in fy_iceworld, my specialty, but not much of that was played. I did like the new mod SourceForts, but it isn't quite polished enough yet. We also played some of Fischer's "Red" mod, which I was awful at because I'd never played it before.
I've also been working my way through Need for Speed: Most Wanted. I have a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, so I'm a happy guy. If I could get a Lamborghini Gallardo I would be set. Freeman doesn't run that game nearly as well as Jim's computer does, which is sad. However my biggest problem was Freeman's keyboard, which has been taking a beating from computer games. So I went out and bought a $10 USB keyboard, and it's definitely much better for gaming. I also have a new USB hub that is much better than the one I had before. I think a wireless keyboard would be even nicer, but I haven't seen any I like yet.
Anyway, travelling sucks, I'm back in Oregon, and I'm going to get some rest.

new year
2006 is here. To me it is just the year I have to get through to get to 2007, when I graduate. Again. Sooner or later, one of these graduations is going to take.
I am not a big holiday person, I just chilled for New Year's Eve. Christmas was good, but I like being able to settle back into the normal routine again. Among other things I got a new cell phone (same phone number though, don't worry), the Band of Brothers DVD set, a carrying case for poker stuff, David Kahn's The Codebreakers, and Ace Combat 05.
I fly back to Oregon on Wednesday so I am scrambling around trying to get everything in Michigan done. I have a lot of stuff to take care of in Oregon too. I haven't gotten anything done that I should have.
Anyway, I'm going to celebrate the new year by sitting in the hot tub.

i fail at sleeping
So it's like quarter to 4 AM and I'm still up. I had a plan to go to bed an hour earlier each night until I got rid of my jet lag, but it's not working. I keep getting distracted when I should go to bed. I've been reading a bunch of books lately like Slaughterhouse-Five, Flatland, Sphereland, lots of interesting stuff. Tonight I was watching a clip of Top Gear and got sucked in by one of the songs, so I hunted it down, found the entire album it came off of, and found some other albums while I was at it, and now it's 4 AM. Damn. The one song in particular I found is classical / electronica from a movie that is supposedly set in the 1800's or something, so it kind of has a steampunk edge to it as well which I like. I do have to say that Top Gear is a very good source of new music for me, my old sources have been dried up for a while and I was sad. Also, I found that a good way to find mp3's online is to do a Google search for "Index of /mp3", it pulls up a lot of random stuff.
I've also been playing Generals again. I beat all 36 missions from Generals and Zero Hour, which is intense when you do it all at once. the seasoned traveller
Yeah, I'm home. Travelling home wasn't too bad, except I finished Snow Crash early in the long and boring flight from Phoenix to Detroit. I did figure out how to get wireless internet in the airports at Portland and Phoenix, and I found out I actually know my way around those airports from previous trips. My flight back in three weeks has a stop in Las Vegas, which I haven't been to yet.
So far haven't had much time to sit and relax since I've been home. I'm still adjusted to West Coast time, so I'm not getting enough sleep. Tomorrow is a family Christmas with my mom's side of the family. I am looking forward to seeing family again, though not the inevitable explanations of what the hell I've been up to in the past few months. I can't quite account for it all myself. Between sleep and being in shock from last term I'm kind of wandering around in a stupor, disconnected from reality. But hey, that's what break is for. Hopefully normal operations will resume next week.
Grad school is just a blur. Being at home is definitely better than being out there. I just want to get my damned degree and come back for good. I am still reading my radar book, and it is in the post-WWII part where basic research resumes and all these graduate students do spectacular things for their theses. Yeah, that's not me. Basically I have to survive the rest of this year, and then next year I start getting classes that actually relate to what I want to do, and then I'm off and running.
Went out shopping a bit today. I'm getting a new cell phone for Christmas because the one I have sucks, but it'll all be worked out so I'll have the same number and whatnot.

So yeah. I'm flying back to Michigan tomorrow. I am packing now because I put it off until the last minute. I was going to be finished, except by packing my small suitcase inside my larger one (because I don't have a lot to take home) it was more than 50 lb. per bag, which is over their arbitrary limit. Now I have to treat them separately, and I don't have anything to put in the big one. I should fill it with weights. How do you like that, Southwest Airlines? Because of your nonsense limit, you have to do twice as much work.
I am looking forward to being home for the holidays, but not to the travel it requires. Seriously, I have to get up at 5:30 AM tomorrow - a killer for a semi-nocturnal person like me - and I won't get home until midnight. A whole day gone! At least I bought a new book that will keep me distracted - Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson, a major cyberpunk novel that I haven't gotten around to reading until now.
I am looking forward to being home for the holidays, but not to the travel it requires. I think I forgot and slept through a biodiesel meeting this morning. Oops. I know I still have to do some website work for them, but it'll be easy when I get the time to sit down and do it. I am thinking about moving some of my volunteer time over to Solar Creek though, it's more in line with what I want to be doing.
Concert update: the planets have aligned or something, for The Hard Lessons and The Nice Device will be playing together on Dec. 22 in Ann Arbor. Expect me to be there.
