New Top Gear tonight. Not their best. I'm worried that they are going to be more ADD this series to try and pack more in, and they didn't have any good music in this episode. Maybe they've just been off too long - we'll see if things pick up again in future weeks.

For as much as I profess to love cars I really have no interest in motorsport. The epic battle of the C6.R vs the DBR9 is pretty much visible only to the Europeans, and rallying is so dragged out it would be impossible to follow when the events are. NASCAR I just find appalling. My only real fondness for the sport was when I found myself in a restaurant in Government Camp watching a Pontiac GXP.R mix it up with some 911s at Laguna Seca. Unfortunately I don't really know what series that is or when it runs, and I still don't have TV anyway.

I finally decided to board the geek train after everyone else and watch the first season of Battlestar Galactica. Unfortunately I watched half of the first episode at 2AM when I was knocked on my ass by a head cold - that really messed me up for the day. The series started off well enough, if depressing - I had no idea of the premise of the show - but it already seems to be dragging down into the same formula. Oh look, they are running out of another critical resource. Another dozen Vipers out of their ostensibly finite supply get blown up to acquire it. And then Baltar gets caught in a wacky awkward position because he has a Cylon in his head. I looked at some later season spoilers and it sounds like some serious retconning happens as well. I don't know if I'm going to pursue this past the first season.

I had a decent weekend. It was Superbowl Sunday, so I made an impromptu purchase of a USB TV tuner...then remembered I get almost no TV reception at my place...and then I got bored with the Superbowl after the kickoff and did more interesting things. Like fixing the toilet. I also started working on my taxes but this is the first time I've done them myself so I have no idea what I'm doing. I bought some DVDs as well, so I watched the first disc of Futurama.

More work tomorrow. I have to remember my iPod - I forgot it on Friday and if I don't have it I can't focus on computer work. Right now I've got five songs on loop I could listen to forever. I'm also going to bring in my Master's diploma that finally showed up so I can make a copy for my cube. I was maybe supposed to show up for work on Saturday, but that was a vague assertion by people who aren't my bosses and the MRB team made a pact to not go in. We couldn't have made a substantial dent in our work anyway.

Xbox Live is finally recovering a bit from the holiday surge so I played some Tiger Woods with my parents. At least the Xbox has some redeeming factor.

I'm in a bit of a quandary about the Xbox. I'm within striking distance of hitting 10,000 gamerscore, but I don't want to get any of the games out there, and I've gotten most of the doable achievements in the games I've got. I also can't buy anything on Xbox Live Arcade because I am trying to get Microsoft to disassociate my credit card and it won't go if I use it. So I am pretty much just playing for fun now, except Orange Box keeps locking up in the middle of TF2. Maybe I will just reinstall SimCity 4 on my freshly reformatted computer.

My brother showed me where NBC streams online so I have been watching the new writerless Conan shows. They're pretty amusing. I'm also cruising Amazon.com. I was originally going to get a new remote thermometer unit, because mine died after being left outside over Christmas, but I can't find a separate unit. I did find the pistol-grip laser-sighted infrared thermometers though. And some other neat stuff.

I'm also thinking of finally upgrading my cell phone...probably just get a basic RAZR like everyone else.

With my luggage situation resolved and some other errands done I decided to tackle my computer issues. I managed to clear up the malware issue but adding that fight on top of previous Windows rot left my computer not entirely stable. I decided to go ahead with a reformat, but it ended up taking four before I got all my troubles resolved (mostly involving Outlook). On the plus side it seems XP service pack 2 is able to uncover the extra unpartitioned space on my new hard drive, so I was able to add another 21GB to my data drive. I was fortunate these reformats were on my terms so all my data has been backed up, although I don't want it sitting on the external drives for too long.

In order to stay sane during the long and drawn out reformats I have been powering through Northern Exposure, I got through two and a half DVDs this weekend. I also went to the bookstore and got The Selfish Gene, which I have never read because I don't know anything about biology.

On a note more in line with normal behavior, more spy photos of the Camaro turned up last week showing the interior which is apparently closer to the concept than I would have guessed, down the the gauges at the base of the center console. There was a note later that day on GM's blog that the Camaro prototypes will now be run without camouflage to test aerodynamics and cooling efficiency. My primary concern is still whether they've put in enough headroom for me.

Christmas today. Among other things I got the entire set of Northern Exposure, a TV show I've vaguely heard good things about but I've been oblivious of it until now. Checking that out should be neat, especially with normal TV running completely on empty now - no Heroes, no Top Gear, no QI, nothing. Tomorrow will be Lansing for Christmas with grandparents. I haven't been up there in a long time, and I've not really been out and about since I got back except for a pizza run.

With Christmas festivities almost over I can try and concentrate on making the most out of being in Michigan. Unfortunately I caught a minor cold en route, so I have been a little out of it since I got back.

autumn tactics

It is definitely turning to fall here and it is messing with my head. I feel like I should be moving into a dorm or getting ready for band invitationals or buying textbooks or something, but I'm 24 now and that is all in the past now. It doesn't help that all the stores are now pounding the Halloween stuff so it almost feels like middle fall instead of the very beginning.

I made an attempt to do something productive weekend but it didn't get off the ground, as the standard time everything closes in Oregon is twenty minutes before I get there, so I spent most of the weekend enjoying my new HDTV setup. I managed to clean out the last two major achievements in my racing game on the 360, and I watched the Back to the Future trilogy on my new upconvert DVD player, which was awesome.

Unfortunately I have not as yet incorporated TV into my HDTV setup, so I won't be catching the new Heroes until I can pull it down from a torrent. I'm more excited about the new series of Top Gear in two weeks anyway.

However, amazing as the setup was this weekend I just figured out that the 360 needed to have settings changed so it could do 1080i, when apparently I had it set to 480p. So when I thought my racing game was too pixelated, all I had to do was crank up the settings on the Xbox. Oh well, at least it only took me a few days to realize that. The higher resolution settings only work as widescreen for some reason, but that just takes getting used to.

I have to say the Heroes finale was kind of a letdown. The last two episodes of the season just couldn't keep my full attention.

scrubbed

Scrubs has jumped the shark. That may be obvious to you, or more likely you don't care, but it annoys me and when I get annoyed I rant. It was bad enough when they decided to make everyone have a baby at once. Then they start giving all the characters diseases - Turk having diabetes is OK, but now JD has something or other so he "passes out when he poos." Poop jokes - always a sign of high level writing. Last week they decided to run a clip show which was awful, as soon as I figured that out I deleted it. I even went to the site jumptheshark.com and Scrubs satisfies quite a few of their criteria. (Apparently there are such criteria, and people with nothing better to do than apply them.)

re-strung

I went to the print shop today to talk physics shirts. They told me they'd send details in a day or so. I started looking at colors as well - there won't be blue shirts in this run, but all the other popular colors are making a return. I have been convinced that red shirts would be a good idea (all you, Mikey) and of course green and orange are back. I liked the looks of the yellow and grey shirts last time as well. All of the shirts will be 100% cotton this time - I wasn't happy that last time some of the shirts were 50/50 polyester. This time I'm probably going to replace my 50/50's with full cotton shirts because I like the feel of the cotton shirts better.

I suppose that on today's news I can confirm a third run of Michigan State Physics T-shirts will be made, I don't have specific details yet though. I have to work out a timeline and get the production end running, and Jim has to start working some marketing magic. I'll throw up a website or something when I'm back in Oregon and have details. We're not taking orders just yet, but definitely drop me a line if you're interested.

Tomorrow I'm going over to Ann Arbor to hang out with some friends. I'm going to wear a Michigan State Physics shirt, of course. Tomorrow is also my last full day in Michigan before I fly home. It's very fortunate that I flew Southwest Airlines this time, because Northwest and Delta both went bankrupt this week.

After I return from Ann Arbor I have to pack everything up and get ready for another day on airplanes. I certainly did a good job of raiding my bookshelves - I won't have a shortage of things to read for a while. I'm wondering if I took full advantage of my week back in Michigan, but I think I did all I could for only having one week (especially for only having a car a couple of those days). I kind of want to hang around in Michigan some more, but my five month long summer is over. It was good to hang out with friends at MSU again, but it also felt clear that it's not for me anymore. Time to move on.

I finished watching Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. I thought the series started off good, then got a little slow in the middle. Then the run up to the climax was pretty awesome, but the final episode was confusing and not quite satisfactory. I enjoyed the series overall though. Now I am trying to find Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. I found out the English version won't be out until November, but I can probably find a Japanese version (subtitled in English) to watch. Penny Arcade claims Advent Children is pure condensed awesomeness. I am inclined to believe it.

I am flying back to Oregon on Saturday morning. Next week is orientation week at Oregon State, and then my classes finally start. It's been a whole five months since I had classes - I am not sure if I am ready, but it's coming anyway. The next time I'll be in Michigan will be December.

My MSU email is acting up at the moment, so I've pretty much switched over to Gmail wholesale. I can still read MSU email but it won't let me send email for some reason, so I'm just responding to all my emails with Gmail. On a side note, I have only been using Gmail for a couple of days and I've aleady accumulated 19 invites.

I got some weird email today. One of the PSM people I talked to thought I was in applied biotechnology, and emailed me demanding to know why I wasn't signed up for some molecular bio class. I replied that on top of my being an Applied Physics student, I haven't signed up for any class yet, because they haven't yet told me all the classes I need to take. However, my remarks were to be sent by MSU email and thus got held up. The PSM person figured out I was in Applied Physics and correct themself, so I just deleted my outgoing email.

I also got bored and Googled myself. I found that Oregon State now has a list of PSM students, including profiles. Unfortunately, they completely made the profiles up - I am quoted as saying that I want to be a 'technical advisor in the aerospace industry.' Right. They also spelled my name wrong. Excellent work all around. I told the PSM people that I would be happy to write a short blurb about PSM if it meant getting rid of the crap they made up.

Since I'm home for the week I can catch The Daily Show. (No cable TV in the apartment.) It seems that their popularity has made them bolder - the joke seem a little punchier, and they dropped quite a few F-bombs in the shows I watched. I still love my Daily Show though. Kurt Vonnegut was on tonight, but it wasn't really a great interview. I like a couple of Vonnegut's books, but many of the others are just him being a dirty old man and getting away with it.

SPS is starting back up at MSU. And what's this - it's not sucking? The change in leadership (read: Sarah left) seems to have done a great deal of good. My brother is apparently even standing in as temporary VP (until they hold proper elections). SPS even ordered good pizza for their first meeting. This is a huge deal in the context of SPS. In the past, SPS has been governed by apathetic inertia so great that they couldn't even order anything other than Bell's pizza. (It is the cheapest...and also sucks. To quote Timmy, you can taste the savings.) SPS usually ordered 8 pizzas for 7 attendees. SPS was once criticized for 'not spending enough money' by the department (because they do nothing), so at the next meeting they ordered 8 horrible pizzas and a 6' sub.

At the new meeting, they ordered Papiano's. And they had enough attendees to justify 8 pizzas.

This is a very positive step for SPS. In fact, with Jim as acting VP and Josh as acting president, they may even be interested in a run of physics shirts! I emailed the print shop quite a while ago about a new run, but they haven't responded. I clearly need to go out to the shop and get the facts in person. The physics shirts are far from dead, they're just...hibernating? Waiting for a triumphant return, perhaps with the rebirth of SPS from the ashes. SPS and the physics shirts, working together - who would have thought?

Jim came home today for our mom's birthday. He brought several full episodes of Top Gear, a car show on BBC. The show is fairly amusing and I like their picks in music. For example, playing Orbital's "P.E.T.R.O.L." for a race between the gasoline and diesel versions of the BMW M5. Or playing music from Master and Commander and Batman Begins while racing a van on the Nurburgring.

In return, I made Jim watch an episode of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Ghost in the Shell is a cyberpunk classic and I have been enjoying Stand Alone Complex.

Tomorrow I am going to be in East Lansing. Good times.

early in the morning

I tried going to bed at a reasonable hour, but that backfired and now I'm up at 4AM instead of going to bed at 4AM.

It looks like the laptop I want is showing up in stores again. Hopefully I can get one today, but I also have to get everything ready for the garage sale tomorrow.

I watched four episodes of That 70's Show in a row the other day. That show took a weird turn somewhere. Donna should not be blonde. Apparently Eric took the year off after high school. He said this, which reminded me of myself:

marathon. Tomorrow I'm catching butterflies! And the day after that
I'm breaking out the giant bubble wand."

I am certainly enjoying my unemployment.
